Rant: My dad swore I'd grow out of this hobby but here I am 15 years later

After I spent $200 on a used DSLR back in high school, my dad sat me down and told me photography was a waste of money and 'just a phase.' He said everyone gets into it for a year then gives up. Well I stuck with it through college, started doing cheap wedding gigs for friends, and last month I sold a print to a gallery in Portland for $300. I still think about that conversation whenever I feel like quitting something hard. He meant well but he was completely wrong about the phase thing. Anyone else have a parent who dismissed a hobby that ended up being a big part of your life?

Holy crap, $300 for a print? That's wild. Good for you, man, that's gotta feel amazing after all those years.

That portrait gig I barely wanted to take ended up paying my rent for three months.
