At a wedding last weekend I watched the groom open gifts while everyone was eating cake
I was at my cousin's wedding in Columbus and the couple opened presents right there during the reception while people were still finishing dinner. It felt weird because nobody really knew what to do, watch them or keep eating. Is opening gifts in front of everyone a normal thing now or did I just grow up in a weird family where that was private?

At my wedding I basically watched people eat while I opened toasters, it was awkward.

Exactly this @the_jamie. It's like you're just standing there holding a bread maker while everyone's laughing at the table. I've heard of people who set up a whole photo booth or even a live band to cover that weird gap between eating and gift opening, so at least you're not just staring at plates. Plus if you time it right, you can sneak bites of cake while pretending to unwrap a serving platter. Honestly, the whole wedding industry sets you up for that awkwardness when they say "just do gifts during dinner.
