Shoutout to the old greenhouse keeper who told me to try a 50/50 mix of sand and peat for my succulents, which I thought was crazy.

After ignoring his advice for years and watching my jade plants get mushy, I finally tried it last spring and now they're the healthiest they've been since I bought them in Tucson back in 2015, so what's the weirdest piece of plant care advice you've gotten that actually worked?

Wait, you ignored that advice for YEARS? How many jade plants did you lose before you finally gave in and tried the sand mix?

Let's just say the number is embarrassing. I had a whole graveyard of those thick stems on my windowsill. I was so sure regular potting soil was fine if I just watered less. Turns out they really do need that gritty mix to avoid wet feet. What finally convinced me was seeing a friend's jade that was ten years old and thriving in pure cactus mix. Have you had better luck with a certain brand of sand?

Pure cactus mix" still holds too much water for some jades, honestly.
