PSA: people keep calling my pothos leaves 'root rot' when it's just the oldest leaves dying off
Third friend this month sent me a pic of one yellow leaf at the base of a pothos and asked if the plant was dying. It's not, the vine drops its oldest leaf near the soil line about every 4 months, and the plant is fine unless 3 or more leaves yellow at once or the stem goes mushy. Check the stem, not the leaf. What's your tell for telling normal leaf drop from actual rot?
Yeah the stem is the whole test, squishy brown means rot and firm green means it's just old age. One yellow leaf at the bottom every few months is the plant doing its normal thing, people just panic because it's the leaf they can see. If the stem's solid you can pretty much ignore it and let it fall off on its own.
