My old seed-starting mix from the garage gave me the weirdest seedlings

I found a bag of it from 2020 and used it for some heirloom tomatoes. Everything sprouted okay, but the stems were all purple and twisted, which my local nursery guy said was probably a phosphorus issue from the old, broken-down nutrients. Has anyone else had a batch of mix go weird on them after a couple years?

Old, broken-down nutrients" is a nice way of saying that bag turned into a science experiment. I've had mixes go weird and just call it quits after a couple seasons. At least your tomatoes gave you a warning sign before they fully gave up.

Yeah, I had a bag do that last summer. I just dumped it all out on a tarp, let it dry in the sun for a day, and then mixed in a bunch of fresh compost. It sort of rebooted it, I guess? The peppers I put in it later seemed okay with it. Sometimes you can salvage it if you're willing to put in the work.

I always thought old mix was fine, but that would change my mind.
