I finally gave those 'grow lights for houseplants' a shot after a year of doubt

My friend in Seattle kept telling me my apartment's north-facing windows were killing my fiddle leaf fig. I thought it was just a gimmick for fancy plant people. After the fig dropped its fourth leaf this winter, I bought a basic $35 LED panel from a garden center. I ran it for 10 hours a day on a timer. Within about six weeks, I saw two new leaves unfurling, which hadn't happened since I bought the plant. It wasn't magic, but the light definitely made a real difference. For those who have used them, how close do you keep your lights to the plant tops?

Hold up, 12 inches? That's wild. I mean, my biggest one is in a 10 inch pot and it's already taking over the room. I can't even imagine the size of the leaves on a plant that needs that much space. Maybe it's just me but that sounds like a whole tree.
