Hot take: I used to think the cactus garden at the Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden was boring

I visited there last month and walked through the main trail, thinking it was just a bunch of prickly green lumps. Then I stopped to really look at one specific barrel cactus, a Ferocactus, and saw it was covered in tiny, bright red flowers I'd missed from a distance. I spent the next hour just looking at all the different blooms (some were yellow, some pink) on plants I thought never did much. It totally changed how I see succulents now. Has anyone else had a moment like that, where a plant you overlooked surprised you?

Honestly I've always found those gardens a bit overrated.

Wait, so you were ready to write off a whole garden because you didn't get close enough to see the flowers? That's like saying a movie is bad during the opening credits. Glad you finally put your glasses on, my dude. Those barrel cacti go all out when they bloom, it's their one big moment. Sounds like you learned the hard way that boring stuff is often just stuff you haven't paid attention to yet.

Yeah @linda_ellis14, that's a lesson I keep having to learn the hard way too.
