Kept dubbing my own tapes with a mic in the same room as the VCR for 3 months
I was recording fan dubs of old kung fu movies onto VHS and could not figure out why my voice tracks sounded so muddy and full of hum. Last Tuesday I was rewatching my copy of Five Deadly Venoms and heard my own fridge kick on in the background during a quiet scene. I had my mic sitting right on top of the VCR the whole time and every tape I sent to my buddy in Toledo had that same electrical buzz. Switched to recording voiceovers in my closet with the mic 6 feet away and the next three tapes sounded clean as hell. Anybody else ruin a whole run of dubs before catching a dumb setup mistake like that?
Man that hurts to read because I know exactly how that goes. I fried a whole batch of tapes dubbing skate videos back in the day, mic was picking up the hum off my old CRT the entire time and I never noticed until my cousin asked why there was a weird buzzing under all my commentary. The closet trick is real too, clothes soak up the echo and you stop hearing the room. Three months of dubs though, that's rough.
