My 200 lb nipping press tipped over mid-press and I just stood there like a muppet
Last Tuesday I was pressing a stack of 12 signatures for a rebind when the whole cast iron nipping press tipped right off my bench and hit the garage floor with a bang you could hear two blocks away. Turns out I'd cranked the platen down way past flush on a book block that was too thick, and the thing just went over like a drunk uncle at a wedding. My neighbor Gary actually came running over in his bathrobe thinking the water heater exploded. Nothing cracked, thank god, but I've got a nice dent in the concrete and a fresh respect for bolting that thing to the bench. Anyone else ever dump a press, or am I the only one who learned this the loud way?
That "drunk uncle at a wedding" line got me laughing because my buddy Pete did the exact same thing with his old standing press last spring. He had a book block way too thick and cranked it down until the whole thing just walked itself off the edge of his workbench. Now he's got two bolts through the feet and a story he tells at every bindery meetup.
