A library patron thought my repair was a new printing method

I was fixing a 1912 copy of 'Leaves of Grass' at the downtown branch, rebacking it with some matching cloth. A man stopped and asked if I was using a 'special machine' to print the old cover design onto the new spine material. I explained it was just careful cutting and gluing, not a printer at all. He seemed amazed that such a clean look came from hand work. Has anyone else had a client or viewer totally misunderstand a basic part of our craft?

Happens all the time, honestly.

Last year I had a guy watch me hinge a new board on a ledger and ask if I was using a special kind of tape. He thought the linen hinge was some high tech adhesive strip, not just cloth and paste. People really don't see hand work like that anymore. It's kind of funny but also makes you appreciate the skill.

Makes you wonder what ancient skills we're missing now.
