Update: Book club fight over a character's motives settled with a simple change
Our group kept arguing if the main character was selfish or just scared. Voices got raised every meeting. I read about using talking sticks in a mom blog. Now we pass an object to speak, and everyone gets a turn without interrupting.

Just a note, talking sticks have been used in many groups for a long time. Your idea still sounds like a smart way to keep things calm.

Actually, the talking stick idea from my old scout troop made things worse. Kids would just mess with the stick instead of listening, and shy people never wanted to hold it. It put more focus on the object than the talking.
