Took me 6 weeks to finish one chapter of that debate book

Our book club picked a dense philosophy book about moral relativism and I spent 6 weeks just trying to get through the first chapter because every paragraph sent me down a rabbit hole of Wikipedia articles. Has anyone else had a book take way longer than expected because you kept stopping to look things up?

Keep making that mistake myself. Used to think I could just skim through the dense stuff, get the main idea. This book changed that completely. Every page had some reference I had to look up, some philosopher I'd never heard of. Realized I was missing half the argument by not digging deeper. Now I just accept that good books take time. No shame in it.

Did you say that book was about moral relativism? That sounds more like a specific philosophical concept, but the post says "debate book" which could mean anything from a formal debate manual to a Socratic dialogue. I'm just wondering if maybe you mixed up the title or topic since "debate book" is pretty broad compared to moral relativism.
