Survey style voting might work okay for picking dates or locations but it falls apart for anything that needs real discussion. The problem is you lose all the context and reasoning behind people's choices. A simple poll can't capture why someone voted the way they did or what their actual concerns are. If the group wanted to avoid arguments then yeah voting is easier, but you're basically trading depth for peace. Might work short term but long term it could make people feel like their voice doesn't matter.

We switched to a rotation system where one person each month gets to pick the book and lead the discussion their way. It gave everyone a chance to set the tone without it turning into a debate about what format works best. So far nobody has stormed out and the conversations have been way more relaxed.
