Our book club debates finally feel constructive, not combative

I remember when our chats about books would quickly turn into personal spats. We slowly worked on hearing each other out instead of just waiting to talk. Last meeting, we debated a polarizing author and kept it focused on the text itself. It's a small shift, but it makes club night something I look forward to again. Your mileage may vary, but for us, it's been a real change for the better.

Sticking only to the text can miss some key points about the writer. Their life or aims can change how we see the story. But making talks friendly is still the best move.

Just feels like overthinking it.

Wait, but if we bring in the writer's life, isn't that moving away from the text? How do we keep the talk friendly if we're guessing about their aims?
