My book club tore apart my favorite chapter last night and it totally shifted how I read endings
They said the protagonist's big sacrifice felt too easy, so now I'm going back through the series to see if I missed the setup in chapter 3, has anyone else had a book completely ruined or saved by a group critique?

Okay so the trick is you gotta shut that down fast or it snowballs. Pick one person to be the "book club boss" for the night and have them literally hold the list of discussion questions. If someone starts going off on a tangent or monologuing about their personal life, just politely say "Ooh good point, but let's circle back to question two about the symbolism." Works every time. I've had to do this with my own group and it saved us from turning into a therapy session about someone's ex. Also helps if you give everyone a 2 minute timer phone alarm. Sounds dumb but trust me, it keeps the justice in the universe.

Read an article that said the best book clubs have a strict "no personal stories" rule from the start. Sounds harsh but it keeps things from turning into therapy hour.
