My book club got hostile over a map typo in the fantasy novel

Last Thursday at the downtown library meeting room, a member brought in a printed map from our current fantasy book and pointed out a misspelled river name. Within 10 minutes, two folks were yelling about whether the author did it on purpose as a hidden clue. I tried to steer us back to the chapter discussion, but the moderator just shrugged and said 'let them sort it out.' We burned 40 minutes on that one word and never touched the ending. Has anyone else had a tiny detail hijack an entire meeting, and how did you get things back on track?

Honestly, I get that it was frustrating, but I kinda side with the two folks who got worked up. When an author puts a map in a book, it’s like a promise that the details matter, so a misspelled river name can feel like a secret or a mistake worth digging into. You said they were yelling about whether it was a hidden clue, and honestly, that’s the fun part of fantasy for some people. The thing is, the moderator letting them go at it might have been the right call, because forcing a topic change when people are that locked in usually just makes them resent the rest of the discussion. Maybe next time, let them have 15 minutes, then suggest putting a pin in it and voting on whether to come back to it after talking about the ending.
