Old timer told me to always weld downhill on verticals
Back in 03 at the Gary mill, a 30 year boilermaker named Carl said never weld uphill on vertical plate. Said it was a waste of time and rod. I kept doing it his way for years until a foreman made me switch to uphill on a code job out in Texas. Turns out Carl was full of it for certain alloys. Has anyone else gotten bad advice from a senior guy that they followed way too long?

Man, that Carl story hits close to home. I had a similar thing with an old pipefitter who swore by never preheating certain steels, cost me a rework that still stings. It's rough when you trust a guy's experience only to find out he was just set in his ways.
