A foreman in Tulsa told me to always back-weld a certain joint, even if the code didn't call for it.
I thought it was just extra work for years, but a vessel I worked on last week failed a hydro test right at that exact seam. He said, 'The book's minimum isn't always the field's reality,' and now I get it. Anyone else have a code-plus practice that's saved your bacon?

Ever run an extra pass on a root gap even when the WPS says you're good?

Only if I want to hear the inspector, @faithwalker, ask me why I'm wasting rod and time.

Sounds like the inspector's favorite hobby is counting seconds on the clock. Bet he times his coffee breaks down to the millisecond too. What's the worst nitpick you've ever gotten from a guy like that?
