My friend in Seattle said my game explanations were 'a confusing info dump'
We were setting up Root and I launched into my usual 15 minute rules lecture. He stopped me and said to just explain the goal and one turn, then start. I tried it last game night and we were playing in under five minutes. Has anyone else found a better way to teach a complex game?

Honestly that fifteen minute rules lecture sounds like a special kind of torture. I mean, my friends would just start throwing pieces at me by minute five. Good on your buddy for the intervention, that's a real pal right there.

Honestly, that sounds like a normal friend thing to say. He wasn't being mean, just direct. Getting a fifteen minute lecture before you even touch the pieces is brutal for most people. Your new way is basically how everyone should teach a game. Start playing fast, answer questions as they come up. Making a big deal out of a teaching tip seems like overthinking it. Just be glad your game nights are smoother now.
