I used to think all board game nights were the same until I tried a themed one

My regular group just played whatever was new, but last month a friend in Portland hosted a 'deduction game only' night with titles like The Resistance and Cryptid. The focus made the rules explanations quicker and everyone got way more into the mind games compared to our usual scatter-shot approach. What's the best themed game night you've ever been to?

I always thought themes were just a gimmick until a friend ran a horror game night with Betrayal and Mysterium. The creepy atmosphere from the music and lighting actually made the games way more tense and fun. It totally changed how I see setting up a game night now.

Yeah, my buddy did a pirate night once and it was a total game changer.

Totally agree with @the_cole, setting a theme can make all the difference. We did a full space night with Cosmic Encounter and some cheap LED lights, and it just clicked. Everyone got into it way more than a normal game night. It feels less like just playing a game and more like a whole event.
