Hot take: I used to think a good game night needed a dozen people and loud energy, but after a quiet session with just three friends playing 'Brass: Birmingham', I realized the focus was way better.
The shift happened about six months ago when my regular group fell apart, forcing me to appreciate deeper games with fewer players who actually read the rules beforehand.

Yeah, I read something similar on a board game site about how smaller groups change the dynamic. It talked about how with 3-4 people, the downtime between turns is way shorter and the table talk stays on the game. @the_hugo you hit it exactly with the locked in comment. We've been running Pax Pamir at 3 players lately and it just flows better. The analysis paralysis almost disappears when the whole table is watching your turn.

Totally get that. I had the same thing happen with my old group, and now I basically won't play anything heavy with more than four people. The vibe is just so much better when everyone's locked in.
