My flat rate box hack cost me 3 trips to the post office

I spent 45 minutes at two different USPS locations in Denver trying to ship a heavy part, turns out the medium flat rate box was cheaper than my own packaging by $12. Has anyone else had the counter clerk just stare at you when you ask for the rate chart?

See, I actually think that clerk staring at you is part of the job. They deal with a hundred people a day who think they found a loophole and it never works out. You want the rate chart? It's on the wall or their little tablet, but they also know the flat rate boxes are the best deal nine times out of ten for heavy stuff. I've walked in with a big wrench in a bubble mailer before and they just pointed at the small flat rate box without saying a word. That's not a bad thing, that's them saving you the math. The real hack is just asking "what's cheapest for this weight" before you even tape up your own box.
