Visited the Griffith Observatory and noticed nobody was watching the shows

I drove up there last Saturday expecting to catch a space documentary in the theater, but the place was packed with people taking selfies and ignoring the actual exhibits. It felt like everyone just came for the view and the photos, not to learn anything. Has anyone else seen a popular spot turn into more of a backdrop than an experience?

Is it really that big of a deal if people are just there for the view and selfies? The observatory has always been a tourist spot first and a science place second, I feel like that's just how it works. As long as nobody is messing with the exhibits, who cares if they're not paying attention to the shows?
