Found out the Cheers bar scenes were filmed in front of a live crowd of only about 200 people, and it changed how I watch sitcoms
I was reading a piece on old TV production last week and it mentioned that Cheers taped in front of a live audience of roughly 200 people in a studio in LA. For some reason I always pictured a huge crowd like a game show, so 200 felt tiny. It made me go back and watch the first season, and now I notice how the actors pause for laughs that you can barely hear on the old audio. I also read that if a joke landed flat, they would stop and reshoot the scene for the next audience, sometimes twice in one night. That means the laugh track on my favorite episodes might actually be from a totally different taping than the scene I am watching. So now I want to know, has anyone here gone down a rabbit hole on how a specific show was taped and had it ruin or improve the rewatch for you?
