Warning: That $40 chain wear tool I bought was totally useless
I grabbed one of those basic chain wear checkers from the hardware aisle at my local shop last month. It said my chain was fine, but I was getting weird shifting on my climb up Mount Tam. My buddy loaned me his Park Tool checker and it showed the chain was stretched past 0.75. I wasted $40 on that cheap tool and now I need a new cassette too because I waited too long. Anyone else get burned by those inaccurate chain checkers?

Nah, I gotta push back a little here. Those cheap chain checkers aren't always totally useless, they just need to be used right. You gotta make sure the roller's sitting on the chain good and not on a dirty link or something, plus those things vary a ton between brands. I've got two different cheap ones that match my Park Tool within a hair, but I also clean my chain every other ride. Not saying yours wasn't wack, just that maybe it's more about the user than the tool sometimes.
