That $40 torque wrench from harbor freight damn near killed a carbon fork

I was skeptical anyone actually snapped a steerer with a cheap clicker, but last week one of our guys torqued to spec and it still cracked at the crown. Checked his wrench on a test rig and it was reading 3nm too high, so that Chinese caliper warning was legit. Anyone else run a calibration check on their budget tools or am I the only one who got burned?

The real issue here is nobody ever checks the torque wrench on a used bike either. I have a cheap clicker that sat in my toolbox for years and it drifted way off because I dropped it once. Even if your Harbor Freight unit was perfect out of the box, one knock on the floor can throw it out. Most people just assume the click means it's right. I started borrowing the shop's beam style torque wrench for anything carbon and it's been dead on every time. Simple tool, no spring to mess up, less to go wrong. That's the angle I never see mentioned when people argue about budget vs expensive wrenches. It's not just about what you paid, it's about how long you've been trusting it without checking.
