TIL a simple 'how's your day going?' can totally change a tense situation
A guy came in yesterday ready to argue over a $3 fee, but I just asked him that and he ended up telling me about his sick dog. He calmed right down and we sorted it out. Anyone have a go-to phrase that just works like that?

My go-to is "what's the story," which usually gets me a story I didn't want.

My cousin tried "what's new" last week and got a 20 minute rant about her neighbor's recycling bins. @lisa5 is right about needing a better line. I've switched to just asking about the weather, which is boring but safe. What do you guys use to avoid the long stories?

That's the worst, @martin.lee. You open a door and suddenly you're stuck listening for an hour. Happens to me all the time. Guess we just need a better line.
