I finally had to explain to a customer that the 'free estimate' for tree removal doesn't include the actual work.

I've done over 200 estimates this year, and at least a dozen people seem to think the free quote means we'll just show up and start cutting for that price, which led to a huge argument yesterday when I handed them a work order to sign.

My buddy runs a landscaping business and he puts "ESTIMATE ONLY" in bold at the top of his quote sheet. He says even then, about one in twenty customers will call him after he emails it, asking when his crew is arriving. They just see the dollar amount and assume that's the final bill.

That's brutal but totally tracks with what @lilys82 said. People just skim for the number and ignore everything else. Makes you wonder how anything gets done right.
