The master barber who told me to stop trimming dry hair, he was so right

I used to do a quick dry trim on guys who came in with cowlicks or just wanted a tidy up between cuts. This old school barber, Manny over in Allentown, watched me do it one slow Tuesday and said "you're just mashing the hair down and guessing wrong, wet it first or leave it alone." I brushed him off for like 2 months. Last week I got a regular who comes in every 3 weeks, and I did the dry thing on his crown again. He came back 4 days later saying it looked uneven and he had to fix it himself. So I tried Manny's way, misted the section, combed it flat, and got a clean line on the first pass. He's been in the game 40 years, what do I know. Anyone else find themselves ignoring advice for way too long because it sounded like too much extra work?

Manny's been cutting hair since before I was born and I still would've ignored him for a full year probably. The part that gets me is how dry trimming just smashes the cowlick down so it looks fine for a day, then springs back up and makes you look like a liar. I tried the mist trick on my own nephew who has this insane double crown and first pass came out so clean I almost got mad about it. Worst part is now I gotta tell every other barber I know to stop doing it dry and act like I figured it out myself.
