Overheard my neighbor say "critical race theory" like it's a monster under the bed

I was watering my front yard in Phoenix last Tuesday when Mrs. Garza across the street yelled to her friend that she'd never let "that CRT garbage" near her kids. Thing is, she was talking about a third grade lesson on Ruby Bridges from 1995. I just stood there wondering if anyone in this state has actually read a textbook since the 80s. Has anyone here tried to get a straight answer from a school board about what's actually being taught?

My friend Kelly has a kid in second grade and she went to a school board meeting just to ask about the reading list. The principal dodged her question for ten minutes and then told her to check the district website. She still doesn't know what they're teaching, just that it's not the monster everyone's scared of.

Ugh, that's so frustrating. I had the same thing happen with my kid's school, couldn't get a straight answer from anyone. I finally emailed the curriculum coordinator directly (found her on the staff page) and she actually sent me a PDF of the book list by the next day.
