The way most people swipe credit cards at gas pumps bugs me

I go to the Shell station on Broadway in Portland about twice a week and I always see people swiping their card before the pump tells them to. If you swipe too early the machine cancels your transaction and you have to start over. Has anyone else noticed this or figured out how to stop doing it?

And I swear that same frantic rush to skip steps is why people can't merge onto the freeway without slamming their brakes.
