My sourdough starter straight up died on me after 2 years, right before a big bake.

Feel your pain, that's a major gut punch after so much time. Might be worth checking if your flour or water source changed recently. Sometimes the smallest shift can throw the whole ecosystem off.

Totally get that frustration, had my own starter go weird after a year. Ended up being the chlorine in my tap water. Started leaving a jug of water out on the counter overnight before using it to feed the starter. That let the chlorine evaporate. My starter bounced back in just a couple of feeds after that. Might be something simple like that throwing yours off.

Big gut punch" is right. Had a similar thing with a batch of pickles once. Fermented for weeks, smelled perfect. Went to jar them up and the whole crock had gone slimy. Like, horror movie slime. Turned out my kitchen had gotten too warm from a broken AC unit. All that work just melted into goo.
