I let them rise for 12 hours like the recipe said, but they came out flat as pancakes. Guess I'm having toast for breakfast instead.

No way, TWELVE hours? That's insane. I've never heard of letting dough sit that long.

Read that and my heart just sank for you, what a brutal way to start the morning. Honestly, I'm with @nancyb29 on this, a twelve hour rise for a basic cinnamon roll dough seems really off. Was it a no yeast recipe or something? Makes me wonder if the recipe itself was a dud, maybe the yeast was dead before you even started.

My mate's dough turned to brick overnight too, totally proving @nancyb29 right about that crazy rise time.
