The $80 proofing box that turned my kitchen into a sweat lodge

After 6 weeks of fighting sticky dough and cracked tops, I finally realized the heat lamp was melting my plastic shelves, so has anyone else had a cheaper alternative that actually keeps a steady 78 degrees without setting off the smoke alarm?

The sweat lodge thing hits close to home, because my first attempt at this involved a space heater and a bathroom, and let's just say my sourdough smelled like burnt hair for a week. I ended up using a cheap seedling heat mat with a thermostat, one of the ones for plants, and it sits under a cardboard box with a towel over it. It holds 78 degrees pretty steady, but the real trick was putting a thermometer on a wire shelf so it's not sitting right on the plastic. Just don't leave it in the sun, or you'll be back to sauna territory real fast.
