Spent 3 hours on a frosting that should've taken 20 minutes

Last Sunday I tried to make a mirror glaze for a birthday cake and it turned into a disaster. The glaze kept clumping and separating no matter what I did, so I kept reheating and re-blending it. After three hours of fighting with it, I finally realized my candy thermometer was off by about 15 degrees. I borrowed my neighbor's thermometer, re-did the batch in 20 minutes flat, and the cake looked great. Has anyone else had a tool fail them at the worst possible moment during a bake?

Has your neighbor offered to move in permanently yet? Tbh, my worst tool failure was a scale that lied about grams, so my bread came out like a brick and I almost cried into the dough. I ended up using a measuring cup and eyeballing it, which somehow worked, but now I have trust issues with anything digital in the kitchen.
