My grainy phone camera phase made me hate good lighting for years

Back in 2018 I convinced myself that shooting photos under harsh overhead bulbs gave them a "raw" look and refused to use natural light. It took scrolling through a friend's properly lit Instagram from a trip to Portland to see how flat and unflattering my shots really were. Has anyone else clung to a bad photography habit way longer than they should have?

@norathomas did those Portland shots really just hit different, or was it more about finally noticing the shadows?

Three rolls of 35mm and not a single keeper from that overcast afternoon. I get what drew690 is saying about the shadows being more noticeable, but for me it was the light, or lack of it, that made those Portland shots work. @norathomas probably knows exactly what I mean - that flat grey sky makes every shadow look deeper and every street sign pop. The city felt muted in a way that let the shapes and lines do all the talking. Not about noticing shadows differently, more about finally seeing the whole scene the way those overcast days want you to see it.

Was it the Portland photos specifically that made you finally switch?
