Unpopular opinion: Star Trek V is a better movie than people give it credit for
I watched it again last week on cable and honestly, it has its problems but the camping scenes and the humor feel more human than the polished later films. The budget was tiny, like 27 million, and you can tell. But the idea of facing your own pain instead of chasing a god feels real to me. Anyone else find something to enjoy in a movie everyone else writes off?

That line about "facing your own pain instead of chasing a god" really hit me this time. I used to skip V every rewatch because of the bad effects and Kirk's screaming, but now I see the campfire scenes as the heart of the whole franchise. It's rough around the edges, but so were the original episodes, and that rawness beats the polished emptiness of some later entries.

My buddy Dave used to skip V too. Said the flying effects gave him a headache. But last year he got sober and went through a rough breakup, and he watched it on a Tuesday night with a six pack of sparkling water. He called me at like 11pm and said the campfire scene where Spock talks about his father made him cry for an hour. Now he quotes "what does God need with a starship" at random moments, mostly when his cat knocks something off the counter. Funny how a movie you write off can just show up when you need it.
