I used to hate Waterworld until I watched it on a hungover Saturday

I avoided this movie for years because everyone trashes it. Caught it on cable last weekend during a rough morning with a bad headache and nothing else on. Honestly? The world building is solid and Costner fully commits to the weirdness. Yes it's goofy but it moves fast. Am I way off base here or does this one deserve a second look from people?

Yeah I had the exact same experience with it. Put it on with zero expectations during a lazy Sunday and ended up really getting into it. It's not a great movie but it's way more fun than people remember.

Ask @abby_black if they think the movie actually works better when you're half checked out and not taking it seriously. I couldn't get past how ridiculous the whole "trading dirt for tomatoes" thing sounds, but once I stopped trying to make sense of it, I was way more into the action scenes. What was the one part that sold you on it - was it the jet ski chase or something else?

Hungover viewing is pretty much the only way to watch this movie, and I've told that to like five people already. The secret is to just let the ridiculousness wash over you - the paper dry land, the jet ski fights, Costner looking like a soggy merman the whole time. Treat it like a B movie that accidentally had a huge budget and it honestly delivers. My trick is to start it with zero expectations and a snack you don't mind getting messy, then just let it ride. Once you stop waiting for the "good part" and just accept the absolute nonsense, it becomes a solid 3 star experience.
