Caught heat for defending Waterworld and it made me rethink my whole approach to bad movies
Was at a buddy's place last month and put on Waterworld for a group. One guy got legit annoyed, said 'you can't just like something because it's a mess, that's not a defense.' He was a film student type, not a snob but he had a point. I always jumped straight to 'it's fun, who cares' without actually explaining why the world building worked or why the set pieces held up. Now I try to lead with one specific thing like the practical stunts or the crazy budget detail instead of just saying it's entertaining. Has anyone else had someone call them out and make you realize you were being lazy about defending a movie you genuinely like?

Completely get what you're saying man. Had a similar thing with The Postman, was defending it at a party and someone hit me with "you just like it because it's long and dumb." Realized they were right that I was just saying it was cool without actually pointing to anything specific. Now I try to lead with the actual reasons like the world building or the practical effects. Waterworld has those insane stunts that hold up way better than most CGI garbage today. Makes you feel like you actually earned the right to like something when you can explain why it works.
