My boss told me to 'just smile more' during a busy shift and it backfired so bad a customer complained I looked like a serial killer.

I took his advice literally at the diner in Tulsa and grinned at every table for a solid hour until a regular pulled me aside asking if I was having a stroke, and now I'm banned from smiling on the floor until further notice lmao, has anyone else had a manager give advice that made things worse?

Bosses love generic advice that ignores how actual people look when they're trying too hard. Next time tell him you'll focus on being polite and efficient instead of performing happiness for strangers. Nothing shuts down a bad suggestion faster than pointing out how it makes customers uncomfortable.
