Just because a boss yells does not make them a bad boss
I know this will get me yelled at here, but I think people on this forum mix up "mean" and "bad" all the time. My old manager at a call center in Tulsa was blunt to the point of rude, and half my team filed complaints about her tone. But she fought for our raises, gave us the schedule we asked for, and when I messed up a client account worth $8,000 she took the heat with her own boss instead of throwing me under the bus. The manager after her was sweet as pie and never raised her voice once, and in 4 months she cut our breaks, ignored every request, and let two people get fired without a word. I get that yelling is not fun, but a boss who is rude and has your back beats a boss who smiles and leaves you hanging every time. So my question is, how do you all draw the line between someone who is just harsh and someone who is actually out to get you?
Disagree with the idea that yelling is just a tone issue. Yelling makes people stop telling you when things go wrong, which is the exact opposite of having your back. Sure, your old manager fought for raises and took the heat, but a boss can do all that without screaming, and the ones who yell usually train a team to hide problems until it blows up. The real line is simple: a harsh boss goes after the problem, a bad boss goes after you, and yelling at people in front of the team is already crossing it.
