My aunt gave me a self help book about being less awkward for Christmas
She handed it to me in front of the whole family and said 'you need this more than I do, honey.' I was like 22 at the time and honestly I just froze. Thing is I read it a few months later and it actually had some useful tips about small talk. Has anyone else gotten a gift that felt like a personal attack but turned out okay?

Did you actually read it and find stuff that helped? Because I got a similar book from my dad once and I was SO mad at first. But then I tried a few of the tips and they actually worked. The one about asking people follow up questions really changed how I talk to strangers at parties. I still cringe thinking about how he handed it to me, but honestly I probably needed it.

Oh man, I got socks with "to do lists" printed on them once.

Ugh, seriously? I read something the other day about how useless gag gifts like that are. They end up in a drawer and nobody ever really uses them. I mean, who looks at their socks for a to do list when they can just use their phone? It sounds like a waste of money and fabric honestly. That's probably one of those things you get as a white elephant gift and then regift to someone else later. Just seems like clutter to me.
