A family friend handed me a $45 singing fish for my 40th, and it outlasted my gym membership
My wife's coworker Doris gave me a Big Mouth Billy Bass at my 40th birthday cookout in Sacramento, and I laughed it off as the worst present of the night. I ended up mounting it above my workbench, mostly as a joke, and that thing has been singing "Take Me to the River" every time someone walks past for close to six years now. My $600 treadmill died in eight months, and the $45 fish is still going strong on the same batteries. Here is the hack part, I put a sticky note on the back with the date it was gifted and a running tally of how many birthdays it has survived. It is at six. Doris got me a gift card this year and honestly it felt like a downgrade. What is the cheapest, dumbest gift you got that somehow refused to quit?
A singing fish outlasting a treadmill is peak irony, and the sticky note tally is the best part. My mom got me a $12 dancing hula girl for my car dash and that thing has been wobbling for four years straight. Pretty sure it will outlive my car at this point.
