Vent: the date who brought his mother along and it wasn't a joke
I met a guy from an online dating site for coffee last Saturday at a local diner. He showed up 15 minutes late and his mom walked in right behind him. He said she just wanted to see the place but she sat down at our booth and ordered a full meal. I asked if we could talk alone and he said she gets nervous when he dates strangers. Has anyone else dealt with a date bringing a parent along without warning?

Wow, been there. A guy brought his mom to a movie once and she sat between us. You have to set a hard boundary right there. I'd have stood up, said "this isn't going to work for me," and walked out. No discussion, no negotiation. His mom's anxiety isn't your problem to manage. Next time, make sure to confirm beforehand that it's just the two of you. If he shows up with a plus one you didn't agree to, you have every right to leave immediately. Dating is already awkward enough without adding a third wheel you didn't sign up for.

Margaret's right about setting that boundary. I had a friend who went on a first date with someone and the guy brought his sister along without telling her, thought it would be "fun." She sat through the whole thing but told me later she wished she'd just left, because it set a bad precedent for the whole relationship.
