Tried the 'let them pick the restaurant' approach vs planning it myself, huge difference

I went on two first dates last month in Austin. First one I let her choose the spot and she picked this loud taco joint on Rainey Street where we couldn't hear each other at all. Second time I planned everything myself, booked a quiet wine bar on South Congress for 7pm. That date went two hours and actually felt natural. Has anyone else found it's better to take control of the logistics instead of leaving it up to the other person?

Look, my last first date I let her pick and she chose this random Ethiopian place off Manor Road. I never would have thought to go there. We ended up bonding over trying injera for the first time together, and it turned into this whole fun adventure instead of the usual boring small talk at a wine bar. There's something about letting the other person steer that shows you're flexible and makes the date feel more collaborative right from the start.

That letting her pick really does turn the whole thing into a shared adventure.
