The pre-date phone call trick I stumbled on after my 14th disaster

So after years of getting stood up or sitting through painfully awkward dinners, I realized something. Almost every bad date I had, we only texted before meeting up. Then this one time, this girl called me out of the blue to confirm the time, and we ended up talking for 20 minutes. The actual date went way smoother because we already had a rhythm. Now I just call anyone before a first date, even if it feels weird. Worst case, they don't answer and I know to lower my expectations. Has anyone else tried this or am I just old fashioned now?
