Can we talk about the 'no talk before the date' rule?

I overheard two girls at a coffee shop near Union Square saying they won't talk to a guy on the app before meeting him, just to keep it 'mysterious.' I think that's how you end up sitting across from a stranger who tells you their whole life story in 10 minutes, like I did last week at that Italian place on 3rd Street. How do you even know if you share basic dealbreakers without a few messages first? Has anyone else tried the silent approach and regretted it?

Definitely skip the small talk and just show up blind, that's a great way to find out they're a hardcore vegan while you're halfway through a pepperoni pizza lmao.
