My buddy told me to skip the Sawtooth Lake loop and just do the out-and-back
He said the full loop around the lake in Idaho was overgrown and not worth the extra five miles. I listened to him and just went to the main viewpoint and back. Met a group at the trailhead who did the whole loop and their photos from the far side were incredible, way better than my view. I felt like I missed the real payoff because I took shortcut advice without checking recent trail reports. Has anyone else done the full Sawtooth loop recently and can confirm if it's cleared up?

Honestly, trail advice is so personal though. Your buddy might hate bushwhacking, but that overgrown section could be exactly what makes it feel wild and rewarding. I've had friends call trails "ruined" just because they saw one downed tree. Tbh, I always check recent photos on hiking sites now, not just reports. Words like "overgrown" can mean anything from some brush to actual impassable thorns.

Impassable thorns" sounds dramatic, but how often does that actually happen on a marked trail?

That's rough, photos from the other side are always the best. Honestly, some of the best spots are a little messy to get to. Your buddy's idea of a bad trail might be my idea of a good adventure.
