Appreciation post: Trail registers saved my butt on the Lost Coast
I never signed them, assuming they were for beginners. On a foggy hike, I wandered off the main path and got lost. A ranger checking the register knew I was overdue and found me. That mistake showed me why they matter. Now I always stop to sign in.

Really? I never sign those things... feels like leaving a breadcrumb trail for anyone to follow.

But what about when it matters? Some stuff is worth the paper trail if it helps people or supports a good cause. I get being careful, but zero trail means your voice never counts for anything official. That privacy trade-off feels worth it to me sometimes, like signing a petition for something you really believe in. Staying totally off the grid means giving up all your say.
