A hiker in Colorado made me question my whole gear list
He said he'd done the Collegiate Loop with just a tarp and a 20 liter pack, no stove. I spent 3 days in the San Juans last fall carrying 40 pounds and barely used half of it. Anyone else gone ultra light and actually stuck with it?

We buy gear for the trips we imagine, not the ones we actually take. Same reason I have a drawer full of kitchen gadgets I never touch, but I still swear I need that spiralizer. Dropping the weight means admitting you're not going to use half of it, and that's a hard pill to swallow.

Did your friend ever actually use that titanium spork they carried 200 miles?
